There are many ways of fighting breast cancer, but most often it comes down to raising money. You can walk for the cure, run for the cure, ride for the cure, but until this year you couldn't bowl for the cure.

The first annual Northwoods “Bowl for the Cure” tournament took place Oct. 14 at Hodag Lanes in Rhinelander. According to Sharon Kline, Chairperson of the Northwoods Bowling Association, over 113 men and women participated in the three game, nine pin scratch tournament. “Bowlers came from Laona, Crandon, Eagle River, Tomahawk and Rhinelander,” said Kline. “There was a $5 entry fee that went for breast cancer research.”

“We raised $2,500 for the Susan G. Komen “For The Cure” Foundation,” said Kline. “We had raffles, 50-50's, paddles and many made donations. Susan G. Komen was a bowler from Peoria, Ill., and a member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).” The October “Bowl for the Cure” tournament was part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the Susan G. Komen “For The Cure” Web site, the USBC has raised over $1 million to help cure breast cancer.

The mission of the Komen Foundation is to “save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cure.”

The “Bowl for the Cure” tournament was part of a series of nationwide events. The Northwoods Bowling Association would like to thank Eric at Hodag Lanes for all the help storing supplies, advertising, printing flyers and posters, line fees and for the use of the lanes for the day. Kline would also like to thank the many businesses and individuals who donated items and time to make the tournament a success. Thanks also to the community for their support.
