The Tomahawk boys' cross country team was hoping for at least a top three finish in Division 2 at the WIAA state meet Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids, but they came in fifth.

The Hatchet girls' team finished 10th.

“We didn't quite get our goal today, but we gave our all and we still have a chance next year,” Cody Lemke said. “We're okay with fifth, that's for sure.”

Port Washington won the boys' title with a team score of 36. Shorewood was second (67), followed by McFarland (97), Chilton (124) and Tomahawk (161).

“The boys had aspirations to get into the mix more with Shorewood and Port, but I'm proud of our young men and the way they finished,” Tomahawk head coach John Zuelsdorf said. “Very solid, very competitive.”

Nick Van Strydonk placed 16th overall (16:57.3), followed by Cody Lemke in 36th (17:24.5) and Nick Hagar in 39th (17:26.6).

Sam Arnott in 72nd (17:48.5) and Tyler Bostick in 99th (18:14.9).

With a young team, with their top runners returning, the Hatchets are already looking toward next year for their chance to capture at state title.

“I think next year having as many guys as we have, we will definitely be able to put on a better show. With all the hard work we have and the tight-knit group we have, we can push each other. We're a family, through and through.
