Community : Despite rain, many popple leaves remain
by Marion Soch - Correspondent
(Popple River News) - Sitting outside in the calm, warm fall evening, Sunday, we focused on the popple tree yellow leaves against the dimming horizon. They looked especially pretty and dense against the dimming sky. It was amazing to realize the amount of leaves still on the trees, despite all the wind and rains we have had. Incidentally, we had approximately 1.7 inches of rain last week. Every bit helps to raise the water table. At least we have some water in the rivers now. Lake levels need a great deal more.
We read some sad news in the Green Bay Press Gazette on Sunday. A young friend who came regularly to this area with his family since he was a little boy, passed away on Saturday due to an accident. His name was Robby Rocheleau, age 30, son of Steve and Ellie Rocheleau of Suamico. They also had a cabin on the Pine River and more recently a cabin on Sunset Lake in the UP. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family. Robby will be missed by all who knew him. We have fond memories of him when he came to our place with his family and friends to visit, and we will cherish them.
Other sad news we were told about recently, was the passing of Wally Stenz, who had a cabin in Popple River and spent a great deal of time here with his canoe in the summer and gun hunting season in the fall along with his family. It was a wonderful meeting place for all the family, summer vacations and family outings. He moved to Arkansas years ago and wintered in Texas. Interment was in Mayville, WI, his home town. Our deepest sympathy go out to Leon, David and Denise and all the rest of the family.
On a happier note, Dan and Peggy Gerlikovski were to their cabin for a long weekend and had as guests, Dale and Diane Mortier of Oconto. Since Dan was on the computer and Dale left his cell phone in his vehicle, I received a call to be the bearer of the happy news to Dale and Diane that they are grandparents again, as daughter, Tina and her husband, Nathan, had a baby boy, three weeks early, Friday evening in Pennsylvania. Congratulations to all the proud people! We hope all is well with the new family.
Tom Van Boxel and friend, Fred are at their property on Bluebird Road for some hunting.
Bill Pokorny and friends were at the Jeff Van Boxel cabin for grouse and deer hunting.
Al Reinhard was at his cabin again this past weekend.
Jerry and Doris Hanson came on Saturday to check out their cabin, as they were called by the sheriff's department that their cabin, along with others in the area, were broken into and robbed. It is such a shame that there are people out there who violate people's personal property and have no respect for others. It is so depressing when things like that happen.
Wayne and Rose Konitzer were at their place again keeping themselves busy as usual.
Larry Van Boxel and Lynn are here for a week tidying up the yard of leaves and pine needles. Larry is still eyeing up that big deer he sees out there in the wild, to take his chances with the bow.
Jim Baltus is out of the hospital and staying with brother, Pete, and wife in Three Lakes. Hope you are feeling better now, Jim.
I am still digging flower bulbs and replanting them. It is amazing how those bulbs multiply over a few years. I had one that looked the size of two huge garlic bulbs; it was an Asian Lily bulb. Now to find room to re-plant them all!
