Woman dies in Merrill house fire

The body of a woman was found inside a Merrill home that was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning.

According to the Merrill Police Department a call came in just before 7 a.m. Monday reporting a house fire in the 1800 block of E. Main Street in the city of Merrill.

The fire was reported by a motorist driving by on E. Main Street.

Merrill police officers arrived at 6:58 a.m. and reported seeing flames showing through an eastside window. Officers attempted to gain entry to the house but were driven back by flames and smoke.

After the Merrill Fire Department knocked the fire down a deceased victim was found inside the residence.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

The Wisconsin State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire with assistance from the Merrill Police Department and the Merrill Fire Department.
