(Hiles News) - I think the Hiles News floated off into “Outer Internet Space” or wherever such stuff goes. Hitting the 'send' button never guarantees that your words will be received somewhere.

The colors are really getting pretty now. The experts kept telling us how stressed the trees were from the drought. Some years like this we don't expect much of a show, but then, Wham! All of a sudden Mother Nature shows up in her most beautiful dress! It's a showing that takes us by surprise every time.

Be sure to take some time to drive around and appreciate the show.

Fall Celebration

The Hiles Service Club would like to invite everyone in Hiles to a Fall Festival at the town hall on September 29. They are planning a feast of sauerkraut, sausages, dumplings and potatoes finished off with those two fall favorites, apple or pumpkin pie. The meal is free, and there will be raffles and games for everybody. The time is 5 to 7 p.m..

Also watch for information about the yard decorating contest for October. The theme is “Scarecrows,” so when you are planning your yard decor, keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that any displays for the contest must be visible from the road that goes past your home so the judges do not have to go into anyone's driveway to see them..

Cans Needed

The Hiles Service Club is donating the proceeds of the aluminum can collection this year to the Playground Committee. The cans should be soda and beer only, and should be bagged in a plastic bag.

Please, for the sake of the gals who have to help the recycler get them loaded, do not put any household garbage in those bags. When there are things like that in the bags it has to be sorted out, and that is one YUCKY job! Stuff like food waste also attracts animal pests. The aluminum can collection bin is located in the middle of town, next to the playground, by the town garage right off the highway, very easy to get to.

Yummy, Easy Candy

This one is so good and so good for you. Both pomegranates and chocolate are healthy snacks. And this one is super easy. This is a recipe the kids would enjoy making, too. Cut it in half if you just want to try it out, first.

Chocolate Pomegranate Seeds

2 large pomegranates

1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

wax paper

Refrigerate the pomegranates (not required, but it helps).

Remove all the seeds, rinse them with cold water in a colander. Drain.

Lay them out on paper towels to let them dry. Make sure there is no water left on them. Water will ruin melted chocolate.

Lay out a large sheet of wax paper on a cookie sheet.

Melt the chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler. If using the microwave, watch carefully so you don't scorch the chocolate.

Add the pomegranate seeds to the melted chocolate and fold gently with rubber spatula until the seeds are thoroughly covered. Spoon out globs of the mixture, whatever size you like, on to the wax paper.

Place in the refrigerator and let them cool overnight (or for as long as you can stand before tasting them). Keep refrigerated. They should keep for three to four days.

Calendar

September 28 - Service Club work day, town hall

September 29 - Harvest Dinner, town hall, 5 to 7 p.m.

October 4 - Service Club Meeting, 1 p.m., town hall

October 4 - Red Hatters, 6:30 p.m., Pine Lake Pub

Ah, Autumn!

"A woodland in full color is awesome as a forest fire, in magnitude at least, but a single tree is like a dancing tongue of flame to warm the heart." - Hal Borland

"There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been!" - Percy Bysshe Shelley
