William was born in Chicago to the late William and Leone Morrow Luessen Sr. on April 20, 1933.

When he was a toddler, his family moved to Onarga, Ill. where he completed fifth grade. During that time he spent most of his summers on a farm in Loda, Ill. His family then moved to Glen Ellyn, Ill. where he attended Ben Franklin elementary, Glen Ellyn Jr. High School and Glenbard High School graduating in the class of 1952. He then worked at the old Parkside Shell (Park Blvd & Pennsylvania) until being drafted into the U.S. Army. After his basic training, he married Joan E. Schmidt in Glen Ellyn on September 5, 1953. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his work at Parkside Shell eventually becoming co-owner.

In 1970, he was hired by the Village of Glen Ellyn as superintendent of buildings to supervise the renovation of the Duane Street Junior High as a police station and village hall. He then served one term as president of the Midwest Buildings and Grounds Association. He also served for 15 years on the Village of Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department and eventually rose to the rank of Second Assistant Chief. In 1989 he retired from the Village and then moved to Wabeno in 1990 where he had built his retirement cottage. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Wabeno and served on the Building and Grounds Committee. He also was an usher and a member of the building committee for the centennial education hall. For a hobby, Bill enjoyed wood working.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; two daughters, Babette Luessen of Glendale Hts, Ill. and Deann (Robert W.) Newman of Chocowinity, NC; one grandson, Michael W. Newman; and one sister, Joni Mitchell of Racine.

Bill is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
