(Hiles News) - The cool breeze through the Northwoods is refreshing after the hot hot days we had, but still no rain to speak of here in Hiles. Lakes are low as they are throughout the north. But the leaves are turning colors quickly this year. So make plans for a fall drive soon.

Playground Update

The Playground Committee would like to thank the people who brought baked goods for their recent bake sale, especially Margaret McCarthy, Mary Houle, Lori Shampo, Amy Bukovic, Angel Sears, Betty Hozan, Pat Pfeiffer, Larry and Bertie Leigh Berg, and also Cathy Votis for her help and the Hiles Outpost for providing a place to set up the bake sale. The sale netted $160 and they were all sold out by noon. They want to thank those who bought baked goods, too, and the favorable comments they received from many people about their project.

They are planning to have more bake sales and hope to have enough baked goods to be in business longer next time. They realize that this sale was on short notice and a very busy weekend, so a lot of folks didn't have time to bake for this sale.

Hiles Service Club Plans Harvest Dinner

The Hiles Service Club met last Thursday and made plans for a Harvest Dinner at the town hall on Saturday, September 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. This dinner will feature sauerkraut, bratwurst and wieners, with dumplings and potatoes with pumpkin and apple pies for dessert. The dinner will be free to all, but you are encouraged to bring along some money as there will be several raffles going on at the dinner. Door prizes will also be awarded. The Service Club and its members will be providing the dinner. They will be meeting on the Friday before the dinner to cook the food.

Also discussed at the meeting was the sign for the town announcements. The sign was bought by the Service Club and wired and painted by Glen Votis. It will be erected after an electrician does some work for the town which will include a line to the site of the sign and to the museum pavilion. Also being planned are direction signs to the town hall and museum.

After discussion, it was decided to donate the proceeds of the aluminum can collection for the coming year to the Playground project. So, remember that the aluminum soda and beer cans you drop off at the bin near the town garage will be going to a worthwhile project. Just gather up your soda and beer cans, only, and bag them in a plastic bag and toss them into the bin. As the bin fills up, they are sold to a recycler.

In the works for October is a fall display with a scarecrow theme contest, open to all. More details will be announced later, but for now, residents of Hiles are encouraged to plan some nice yard displays for October, visible from the road. There will be judging and money prizes at stake.

Red Hatters Fun Morning

If you were at Paul and Terri's Pine Lake Pub on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., you may have noticed a zany bunch of ladies in pajamas and red hats enjoying breakfast. That was their fun outing for September.

The group was also invited to join the Crandon Red Hat group for cocktails, dinner and a style show at Mallard's on Metonga starting at 4:30 p.m. on September 18. Any ladies interested in attending this event may contact Joanne Klein to let her know you'll be there.

Calendar

September 28 - Service Club work day is at the town hall

September 29 - Harvest Dinner is at the town hall at 5 p.m.

Ponder These

When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Many people quit looking for work when they find a job.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Some don't have film.
