(Popple River News) - Are we getting ready for fall? It seems to be coming quite rapidly now...evenings are getting rather chilly and some of the trees are beginning to turn colors. Every day we see more color.

The black cherry trees have been ripening all along and falling off the trees, due to the stress of drought, as even the green ones are falling. Blackberries are not too bad this year despite the drought conditions, as folks are picking at this time and getting satisfactory amounts.

There was a fire in town this past week at the Konitzer place and the fire department didn't even have to be called. The cause of fire was expected to have unknowingly come from a short in a golf cart after parked for the weekend, as upon returning to their place on Tuesday evening, they found charred remains in the garage. The fire seemed to have snuffed itself out due to the lack of oxygen in the tightly, well-built, dry-walled building. They spent the balance of the week cleaning garage walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, equipment and the tedious task of taking inventory of contents and estimates on repairs. This is always an unpleasant task and a fire is always a physical and mental strain. We hope all goes well with the revitalization and are sorry for your loss and inconvenience.

Jan Lange was to Two Rivers for a few days recently visiting with the family.

Joe Kramer was here over the weekend and had great weather to enjoy.

The Monkas were are their place for the weekend, also.

We are happy to hear John Kobylarczyk is doing well now after his recent surgery and hospital stay at Marquette. Stay well now.

We were to Iron Mountain on Wednesday for Ed's routine checkup and some shopping. We got to take advantage of some good sales there.

As Paul and Vergil Schultz were on vacation all week, we joined them for breakfast one morning and also went cabin hopping to see friends we hadn't seen for a long time, Don and Mickey La Fortune. While there, Paul's brother, Ed and wife, Arlys and daughter, Lynn also stopped by there, so it was quite a gab-fest reminiscing about days gone by. We also stopped by the Schultz cabin to see their new water feature they built in one weekend with a molded pond, lots of colorful rocks of all shapes and sizes, incorporating a beautiful waterfall and fountain in the feature. Paul and Vergil are very artistic and do a great job with their landscaping ideas.

We spent Sunday afternoon at the Macalusos to see all their latest additions to their landscaping in the yard. They took advantage of all the good weather we had this summer to install two water features and many plants, trees and shrubs. All is looking very beautiful and truly is a labor of love to have such a beautiful yard.

Lois Kemps has been traveling several days a week to visit Russ in the Florence Villa Nursing Home. He is adjusting well there and I hope he is comfortable with his new home. We wish him well and will keep him in our prayers.

We will keep Jim Baltus in our prayers as he continues his treatments for his cancer. Cancer treatments are always difficult times...our thoughts are always with you, Jim.
