(Popple River News) - Those in the Northwoods vacationing this week and over the weekend had a real treat to great weather. A good rainfall on Thursday gave us about an inch and a half of rain and the sun shone beautifully thereafter. This is good swimming weather now, lots of heat to enjoy the beach.

We had a message on our answering machine upon arriving home on Sunday afternoon from Green Bay notifying us that former resident, Ernest Krueger, had passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 93. Ernie and Shirley were longtime visitors to their vacation home while working in Milwaukee, and then retired here for many years. Ernie gave many years of dedicated service to his town as supervisor, before leaving to live in Sturgeon Bay (his hometown) at an assisted living home. He had been in pretty good shape for a man his age, but began to fail after minor surgery in June. Shirley will be going to live in the nursing home in Sturgeon Bay. Our deepest sympathy to all the family. We have many good memories of Ernie and he will be sadly missed.

Other sympathies go out to the entire Gilligan family with the loss of their mother, but especially to Jerry and Patsy Gilligan, who live in Popple River. Jerry's mom lived in Popple River with her family at one time in her life. She also lived a long life and blessed with many children who loved her dearly and looked after her with loving care. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Paul and Vergil Schultz were here over the weekend again, finishing up their summer fix-up chores. Now it is play time. They also feel working on their vacation home is play time too.

Joyce and Jr. (Herman) Wasmund were vacationing here at their summer home for about a week. This is their favorite place to be. Jr. came over to visit on Monday morning for a bit and had a nice chat.

The Konitzers were here again at their place.

Steve Johnson came for a couple days early in the week on business.

We went to Green Bay on Saturday to attend the wedding of a niece and had a good time visiting with all the relatives. Weddings and funerals are places where one gets a chance to do this, it seems, as it is hard to visit everyone on an individual basis at times. Sunday, it was shopping a bit before coming home. The population in the Northwoods must have exploded over the weekend, as there were ever so many cars headed south.

August birthdays are Russell Kemps on August 1, Mary Vercauteren on August 3, Chris Stefanski on August 5, Angie Miller on August 6, Shelly Howen on August 9, Mary Reinhard on August 11, Frances Walli on August 17, Shirley Pagel on August 18, Janice Lange on August 26, Steve Johnson on August 29 and Jan Zirbel on August 30.

August wedding anniversaries are Nancy and Rick Lemmen, 7 years on August 4; Jim and Mary Egen, 37 years on August 15; Paul and Vergil Schultz, 46 years on August 19; Terry and Shelly Howen, 18 years on August 19; Merle and Janice Vanden Langenberg, 42 years on August 21; Tom and Heidi Kitslaar, 14 years on August 21; Shirley and Bob Pagel, 52 years on August 25 and Cal and Jean Peters, 35 years on August 26.

Congratulations to all and enjoy your special day to the fullest.

Remember the sick and ailing in your prayers.
