(Hiles News) - It's been hot, hot, hot! Need I say anything more?

Hiles Fire Department Pancake Breakfast Ruled a Huge Success

On Saturday the North Station of the Hiles Fire Department served pancakes topped with blueberries and sausage to three hundred people from the surrounding area. The breakfast eaters came from the area lakes, the nearby campgrounds, and it was learned that one young couple even traveled from Japan to attend the event.

Highlights, in addition to a delicious breakfast, were a silent auction of fine art, a raffle of donated items, and the sale of carefully prepared baked items. The fire department provided information on organ donation, emergency preparedness, and fire safety. Families were given a kit from which to develop a home escape plan for potential fire or other emergency situations. The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week in October is “Practice Your Escape Plan.” Favorites for the children were ‘fire chief' hats and coloring books.

Thanks to the generous community, the event added three thousand dollars to the fire department's fund raising treasury.

Theater goers Enjoy Outing

The Hiles Theater Group enjoyed an outing to Hazelhurst for a production of “Greater Tuna” at Northern Lights Theater. The group included luncheon at various area restaurants in their day. The heat was a bit overwhelming, so some of the theater goers cooled off with ice cream on the way home.

Service Club to Meet

The next meeting of the Hiles Service Club is Thursday, August 2, at 1 p.m. at the Hiles Museum. The club has had the museum open for the Saturdays in July without many visitors stopping in. They will decide whether to have it open in August. Whether or not they do, remember that you may see the museum at just about anytime by getting in touch with a member of the Service Club to open it for you. The Hiles History books, as well as a few remaining cookbooks are still available from those same members.

Red Hatters to Gather

The Hiles Hattitude will meet at Pine Lake Pub on Thursday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. The plans for August's Outing have been made, and tickets have been purchased for the performance of the Tamboritzans, a troupe of dancers and musicians performing Mid-European numbers. The troupe is from Duquesne University. The September event is sure to be a topic of discussion at Thursday's meeting. All ladies who are interested in having fun are invited to become a part of the group. All you need is a spirit of fun and a red hat (or pink hat if you're under 50). For details, call Pat at 649-3568.

Calendar

August 2 - Hiles Service Club will meet at the Museum at 1 p.m.

August 2 - Red Hatters will meet at Pine Lake Pub at 6:30 p.m.

Thoughts on Summer

"What a beautiful, sunny morning. It makes you happy to be alive, doesn't it? We can't let the sun outshine us! We have to beam, too!" Takayuki Ikkaku, Arisa Hosaka and Toshihiro Kawabata, Animal Crossing: Wild World, 2005

"Summer afternoon - Summer afternoon... the two most beautiful words in the English language." Henry James (1843 - 1916)

"The summer night is like a perfection of thought." Wallace Stevens (1879 - 1955)

"In summer, the song sings itself." William Carlos Williams (1883 - 1963)

What's Cooking?

Probably one of the nicest things you can make for dinner in the heat of summer is reservations at one of our fine area, air conditioned, restaurants, and let their fine chefs cook up something wonderful for you while you enjoy a tall glass of your favorite cool beverage. Keep cool!
