The Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce and Manitowish Waters Cranberry Growers Association are holding free cranberry marsh tours every Friday at 10 a.m., from July 13 through October 19.

The first eight tours, July 13 through August 31, begin at the Manitowish Waters Community Center, located at Hwy. 51 and Airport Road, and feature an educational video, samples of cranberry juices and Craisins, prize drawings, a picture display, and a question and answer period. Participants then follow a marsh guide in their own vehicles to the Vilas Cranberry Company Marsh on Alder Lake Road for the last half of the tour. The last seven tours, September 7 through October 19, are fully conducted at Indermuehle's Alder Lake Cranberry Marsh, 397 Cranberry Blvd. off of Alder Lake Road. All Friday tours are held rain or shine, pre-registration is not required, and all ages are welcome.

The Chamber's annual Cranberry Colorama, always held the last Saturday of September, also features free shuttle bus cranberry marsh tours from the Community Center to one of the local marshes.

There are five marshes in Manitowish Waters - Indermuehle's Alder Lake Cranberry Company, Bartling's Manitowish Cranberry Company, Folsom Farms, Rayala Cranberry Company, and Vilas Cranberry Company - ranging in size from 63 to 185 acres and totaling about 600 acres. They surround the northeast one-third of Little Trout Lake, which is located along the southern edge of the town line.

For more information, contact the Manitowish Waters Chamber at 1-888-626-9877 or visit www.manitowishwaters.org.

Catch-and-release fishing on warm days
July has arrived in the Northwoods and already the July Fourth celebration is over for another year. Although boat traffic increased over the Fourth, from our vantage point the traffic was down from previous years. Was it down because the Fourth was in mid-week or was it down because of the high price of gasoline? READ MORE >
