Community : Pick a picture book Sue's summer story suggestions
by Sue Banie - Correspondent
I have been hearing many area residents tell stories about bears. It's awesome to see wildlife in our north woods, but another perspective is that the bears are a nuisance. In many children's books, nuisance animals become very cute. Think of mice, or skunks, or, yes - bears. I'd like to suggest some of my favorite bear stories for you to pick up and enjoy this week. They are all older books, but timeless classics, and are sure to become favorites of a second or third generation. Don't miss one of the best opportunities of summer - some extra time, some relaxing time, some parent/child time - to read!
“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?” by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Eric Carle, is a brightly colored rhyming book that young children will find delightful. The answer to the repetitive phrase that is the title of the book can be predicted each time the child turns the page. Parents will love listening to their child chime in with the words they remember, and name the colors and animals. You can print a picture of each animal in the story to color or to make into a puppet at the Web site www.dltk-teach.com.
“Blueberries for Sal,” by Robert McCloskey, is another timeless favorite. Sal and her mother go berry picking at the same time that mother and her cub are picking berries. Both “kids” wander off and find the other one's mom in this gentle adventure that is a pleasure to read.
Then, enjoy making some Bear Claws out of refrigerator biscuits. Begin by putting a spoonful of blueberry pie filling in the center of a flattened circle of dough. Fold over into half a circle. Make five small balls out of another half circle of dough, and add to the first biscuit for claws. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake.
A messier idea is to let the kids finger-paint their bears with chocolate pudding on a piece of waxed paper - fun and yum!
My other favorite bear characters are Corduroy and Winnie the Pooh. The Berenstain Bears also have many fun adventures to read about, and you can play games on their Web site at www.pbskids.com. Have fun picking your picture book!
