Community : Blackwell Job Corps launches recruitment drive
Laona - Blackwell Job Corps Center has launched a recruitment drive for students to fill its career technical training classes, officials announced today.
“Blackwell Job Corps students receive self-paced academic instruction, while pursuing career technical training in the field of their choice,” said Job Corps Regional Director Donna Kay.
Classes are offered at no cost and are open to young adults ages 16 through 24 who meet specific income requirements.
“Students who enroll in our program learn career skills that enable them to compete in today's job market,” Kay said. “Job Corps students choose from a variety of career areas on-center, such as business technologies, health occupations and welding.”
Job Corps students work with advisers and instructors to set career goals and to receive academic, job search, interview and career development training.
During training, Job Corps provides residential students with room, board, basic medical and dental services and some spending money.
Students spend approximately one to two years completing career training, while working toward a high school diploma or GED.
Job Corps graduates are eligible for transitional support services, which help students search for a job, locate housing, and research child care and transportation services for up to 18 months after they graduate.
The Blackwell Job Corps Center, located at 4155 County Highway, has a capacity of 205 students. Career technical training opportunities at the Blackwell center include bricklaying, business technologies, carpentry, construction, electrical, health occupations, painting and welding.
Students may also take advantage of many extracurricular activities such as around-town activities, arts and crafts, community service and leadership programs. In addition, athletic programs for baseball, basketball, camping, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball are available.
Established in 1964, Job Corps has trained and educated more than 2 million young people serving approximately 60,000 young adults each year at 122 centers across the country. Job Corps is the nation's leading career technical training and education program for ages 16 through 24. Job Corps is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. First place at tourney
The United Northwoods U19 men's soccer team attended the 11th annual Eau Claire United Invitational Soccer Tournament on June 15-17 and placed first. The team played on Saturday, defeating Stevens Point 3-1 and Chippewa Falls 3-0. On Sunday, they faced Eau Claire and finished with a 3-3 tie. The championship game matched United Northwoods against Eau Claire United in a rematch after the points were awarded from the three previously played games by each team.
