News : Gardens growing nicely after rain

by Marion Soch - Correspondent

Popple River News - These nice warm days and nights have made the flowers and gardens grow very nicely. We had another .3 inch of rain on Wednesday last week and hopefully we will continue to get a shower here and there so things do not get too dry. It helps to put out a rain barrel under the eaves to catch all that extra rainwater for watering later. Mosquito "donuts" are available at garden centers, at reasonable prices, in the larger stores (I got mine at Menards) to put in the rain barrels to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching.

During the windy weather we had Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, we lost a large branch off our plum tree. We went to Hanson's Nursery in Rhinelander for advice on repairing it, and they gave us explicit instructions on doing so, including showing us their handiwork on doing so on one of their trees. So we managed to pull the limb up and drill the hole and put the bolt through and cinch it all together, hoping for success...time will tell.

Incidentally, I have a correction from last week's article in a misprint about the egg mixture for keeping deer off foliage in the garden or flower plants. It should be twelve (12) eggs beaten to one (1) gallon of water. Do not spray this mixture on maturing heads of veggies that will be eaten that you cannot peel, or leafy things, such as lettuce, spinach, etc. Since deer love hostas, this would be a good thing to use on them.

This past weekend seemed to be a quieter one in this area, but there were a few visitors around, the ones that enjoy their Northwoods homes every week.

July birthdays are Bonnie Lewis on July 1, Vince Ruby on July 3, Mike Stanz and Allan Stranz on July 4 (see what difference one little letter makes in a name?), Bob Nelson and Mike Stranz (grandson of Allan) on July 5, Jeff Walli on July 7, Jeff Peters and Gerry Rhoades on July 12, James Rhoades on July 13, Marilyn Glime on July 16, Ellsworth (Shorty) Hoyt on July 20, Steve Licitar on July 22, Barb Rasmussen on July 26, Cole Walli and Kevin Huben on July 29 and Diane Gastrau on July 30.

July wedding anniversaries are Yogi and Bonnie Chase, 25 years, on July 24; Jim and Red Hagen, 51 years, on July 28 and Bill and Jan Lange, 55 years, on July 29.

Congratulations to all and may God shower His blessings on you on your special day, and enjoy it to the fullest.
