There is a new massage therapist in town and he has quite a background. From Moscow to Rhinelander is a jump, but Igor Myaskovskiy is happy to be making his mark in the Northwoods in a number of ways.

Myaskovskiy left Moscow one month before the Berlin Wall came down. Prior to that he was a massage therapist with the Red Army Hockey Team and the Russian National Olympic Team. Myaskovskiy worked with the Russian hockey team, figure skaters and volleyball players during the Moscow Olympics of 1980.

Massage was developed by the Greeks around 600 B.C. to boost the performance of Olympic athletes. They believe massage is part of a complete mind-body philosophy. Myaskovskiy was introduced to these methods during his training as a physical rehabilitation therapist in Russia.

Myaskovskiy has worked with the Comdell Medical Hospital in Illinois for seventeen years. The hospital has a health club connected with it and many Chicago Bears coaches and players are members of the club. Myaskovskiy also does massage for professional hockey team players in the United States and Russia.

Myaskovskiy moved to the area with his wife Lana, daughter Yana, and son Stan two years ago. Yana attends Northwestern University and Stan is a 2007 graduate of Northern Pines High School in Eagle River. Lana practices the “Body Talk” system of holistic healing at the Time Spinner Healing Place in Eagle River.

There are a number of massage styles available from Myaskovskiy at Spine and Sport. These include European, Oriental, Swedish, sports, relaxation and foot massage. Classical massage is available, which is a combination of European and Swedish designed to improve circulation and break down waste products in your muscles.

Why do you need massage? It helps relieve joint and muscle pain, stabilizes blood pressure, relaxes both mind and body, releases tension from occupational ill-posture, and eases jet lag and headaches.

Coaching is important to Myaskovskiy and he thanks Steve Graf, Athletic Director at Conserve School, for giving him an opportunity to coach volleyball. And Myaskovskiy would like to say thanks to Christine Hare, massage therapist in Eagle River, for her support and good advice.

You may contact Igor Myaskovskiy for information or an appointment by calling Hair Design at 365-5262 or Spine and Sport Physical Therapy at 365-5252.
