With all the recent changes and additions to disease preventable vaccines, the Forest County Health Department would like parents to be aware of what is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for their 11 and 12 year old children.

Tdap is a vaccine with tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis components. Because pertussis (whooping cough) is always present, it is now recommended that anyone 11 to 64 years of age be given one dose of Tdap, which contains a pertussis component, if it has been at least two years since their previous tetanus shot.

HPV (Human papillomavirus vaccine) is a new vaccine that is recommended to protect against four strains of the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer. At present, the vaccine is only for girls. In the future, there may be one for boys as well.

MSV4 (Meningococcal vaccine) is recommended to prevent meningitis which can be a fatal disease if not diagnosed and treated early. If vaccine is not received by 11 or 12 years of age, it is highly recommended at high school entrance or for freshmen entering college.

The vaccines for hepatitis B, polio, measles-mumps-rubella and varicella (chickenpox) should have been received between birth to five years of age. If your child has had the chickenpox disease, the vaccine is not required; however, all other vaccines are required for school entrance. If your child has not received the required or recommended vaccines yet, contact the Forest County Health Department at 478-3371, or your medical care provider for more information or an appointment to protect your child's health by getting them vaccinated.

Fond memories of fisherman's holiday
Regular readers of this column know that traditions are important to me and many of our close friends. Last weekend our guide group enjoyed re-living a tradition that we have participated in for nearly thirty years. We took guests of the Jaeckle Company fishing. In addition to fishing some members of the group hit a small round ball around at the Northwoods course. READ MORE >
