Forest County Health Department WIC Draft Pick-up is Wednesday, June 6 from 8:30 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the County Health Department in the Courthouse in Crandon.

Father's Day at the YMCA
In 1909, a young woman named Sonora Louise Smart heard a sermon about Mother's Day. She thought of her father, a Civil War veteran, who had raised her and five brothers after their mother died while giving birth. That day, inspiration struck: Why not have a special day for fathers? Smart shared her idea with local Protestant ministers at the YMCA of Spokane, Wash., who passed a resolution to observe a new occasion, Father's Day. The Spokane YMCA sponsored the first celebration on June 19, 1910. (June was the birth month of Smart's father.) Smart suggested honoring fathers through religious services, special meals, small gifts and wearing roses: red for living fathers and white for the deceased. The Father's Day idea spread rapidly, and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge recommended a national observance. READ MORE >
