A great opportunity and a shared vision brought Marilyn Duschl to the YMCA of the Northwoods. The goal of bringing health and wellness to the community is the shared vision.

Duschl is the Associate Wellness Director for the YMCA. In that capacity she manages the wellness center and all adult and youth group exercise programs. As part of the paid staff, she supervises instructors and trains the fitness staff.

Duschl also chooses classes for the program guide and oversees outreach programs in Eagle River and Crandon. While Eagle River waits for the new YMCA building, classes are held at the Northland Pines High School.

Originally from Park Ridge, Illinois, Duschl has worked in the health and fitness industry since 1970. She co-managed a hospital based fitness center and taught for the YMCA while in Illinois.

Her story is familiar in many ways. Duschl and her husband have vacationed in the Northwoods since 1983.

For them, summer has always meant “up north.” She and her husband George moved to the area in 2001 after retirement. George Duschl owned a vacuum cleaner repair shop in Illinois. They have one son, George.

Duschl's intention was to work part time jobs to keep busy but the job with the YMCA presented itself and she went back to work full time. “It was a ground floor opportunity,” said Duschl. “I was hired just before the new building was opened. We're just at the beginning with the new YMCA, just at the starting line.”

There are many reasons for living in the Northwoods, and Duschl is aware of how lucky she is. The couple lives on a lake in Three Lakes and enjoys all that entails.

“It's nice to go home from the job,” said Duschl. “We come from the city and didn't realize we never saw the stars. My husband and I like to fish: He fishes walleye and I fish with a good book.” Her husband does all the cooking now and, of course, his favorite dish is fish.

“I play tennis with a group in Eagle River and am a member of the Northwoods Quilters in Rhinelander,” said Duschl. “I'm here at the YMCA because I like to educate people to being healthy. Working here is fun and casual, and the fun is important. I really want to make lives better.”

Vacationers and locals gear up for summer
The traffic on area roads and lakes has increased and will remain at this busy pace until Labor Day weekend. It was interesting as we fished several area lakes to watch many docks being returned to the water. One summer cabin had six vehicles parked nearby and at least ten fellows using rakes and another mowing the lawn. Persons who visit us during the summer go through so much work to enjoy our short summer. READ MORE >
