The Oneida County Land and Water Conservation Committee has scholarships available for any teachers who are employed within Oneida County, teaching Oneida County students, and who are looking for new ideas on incorporating environmental education into their classroom curriculum. The deadline for applying for the scholarship is June 4.

A variety of different workshops will be held at Trees for Tomorrow this summer. Each week is an integrated combination of lectures, field activities, and on-site tours designed to show teachers various components of Wisconsin's natural environment.

The workshop schedule includes:

- June 25-27: “WPS Solar Wise Renewable Energy” is a three-day workshop for high school teachers offering in-depth training in renewable energy education. Participants will receive the completely revised Solar Wise for schools curriculum along with all supporting lab equipment, references and resources. An offsite renewable energy field trip is planned.

- July 9-13: “Watercolors - Painting Nature's Beauty” will include demonstrations and lessons in creating good design, color harmony, creating atmosphere and mood in your paintings and water reflections. On-location painting will be part of the class experience, weather permitting.

- July 16-20: “Exploring Natural Resource Issues Through Service Learning” is a two-part workshop for teachers of “at-risk” students that will end in summer of 2008. This session provides an introduction of service learning projects, creating an awareness and immersing teachers in the projects. During the year, teachers will design and teach a service learning unit and work with students on the project.

- July 18-22: “Nature Photography” is suitable for beginner to intermediate photographers who use an SLR-style camera or a digital camera.

- July 23-27: “Create an Herbal Future - Herbs and Medicinal Folklore” will explore the basics of herbal usage as cleaning products, spa products, personal care products, garden plants, and kitchen products.

- July 30-Aug. 3: “North Country Wetlands” will focus on plant identification and the strategies of survival for these amazing plants of the northern wetlands. Participants will immerse themselves in the aquatic plants of northern bogs, swamps, wet meadows, streams, and lakes.

- Aug. 13-17: “Forestry for Non-Formal Educators” will explore the forests of northern Wisconsin and participants will learn more about the many components of Wisconsin's forests and the management of these lands. Includes lessons on soils/geology, watersheds, forest management, logging techniques, etc. Will take field-based trips to several sites.

To apply for a scholarship, send a letter indicating your interest by June 4 to Oneida County Land and Water Conservation Department, P.O. Box 400, Rhinelander, WI 54501-0400, or call Nancy Hollands at 715-369-7838.

Vacationers and locals gear up for summer
The traffic on area roads and lakes has increased and will remain at this busy pace until Labor Day weekend. It was interesting as we fished several area lakes to watch many docks being returned to the water. One summer cabin had six vehicles parked nearby and at least ten fellows using rakes and another mowing the lawn. Persons who visit us during the summer go through so much work to enjoy our short summer. READ MORE >
