Wabeno News - Hi everybody.

Wow! This week flew by quickly. Randy Laatsch and his crew were back on Monday to work on the Flagpole Project and again on Friday. It is coming along nicely. This is a continuing project. Right now we have about 60 bricks in place with more to be inscribed. The plan is for the bricks to be laid out in a circle around the flagpole, and that, being the hub of a wheel, with six spokes of bricks extending to the outer rim of the wheel. In the original plan, lights are set in the flower beds that are between the spokes of brick but we have them on posts set close to the flagpole. The smaller lights are aimed upward to the flag, and larger lights are to light the walkway. It will be exciting to see it finished with the flowers planted.

We said good-bye to a good friend this week, Mary Quinlan, a wonderful woman, who had a wonderfully long life. She made friends easily and was a true friend to all. It's sad that she is no longer here, but I am so very grateful I was given the opportunity to have her in my life for as long as I did. Mary will be missed.

The Wabeno Lions Club put on the 53rd Annual Senior Banquet at the Wabeno High School on May 16. What a wonderful event this is for the kids and adults alike. This years' 2007 Seniors chose as their class motto: “Life's a journey; live it to its fullest.” Their class flower is the purple stock with a white carnation; class song is “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve; and class colors are black, silver and purple. The class advisor is Mr. Earl Blankenheim. Class officers are President Jessica McKenna, Vice President Brittany Boney, Secretary Savannah Hoeldt and Treasurer Tyler Liptack.

The speaker for the evening was Mr. Glen Thielke, who was a very informed multi-talented man of many degrees.

The kids of this class entertained us with their musical abilities and I, for one, was very impressed with their performances. What a joy it is to see the kids at this stage in their life, knowing they are about to venture out into the world with so many choices. Life has really compounded itself. It used to be so simple, we would go out for breakfast and the menu would be eggs, hash browns, toast, bacon and coffee or oatmeal. Now it is what kind of toast, how do you want your eggs, and what kind of potatoes do you want. Nothing is simple any more. Preparing the kids for those choices was simple but all the other choices they have in their life now is not so simple. I remember one thing Glen Thielke said and that was, “Don't be afraid to ask for help and find a mentor.” These are the words of a man who has been there and done that. I hope they remember that above all else. I am confident they have all the tools to make their life exciting and worth living. I'm not saying anything you all don't already know, but the Wabeno School has a wonderful group of teachers to help these kids be prepared. I am so proud.

Don't you just love this place? I do.
