Redemption for Hodags

In what could be classified as a redemption game, the Rhinelander girls’ soccer team beat Antigo 1-0 Thursday to avenge a loss on May 3. The win by the Red Robins two weeks ago ended the team’s 33-game losing streak in Wisconsin Valley Conference play.

The Hodags’ victory gives them a little momentum before they play Marshfield Saturday during the final week of conference action.

Rhinelander amassed over 20 shots against Antigo, while Hodags goalie Valerie Osterman only had to make four saves.

“The play was pretty much controlled by us -- we are just having a tough time scoring,” Millot said. “We were trying to force things because we wanted to win so bad.”

The only goal of the game came about eight minutes in when Michelle Mays found an open Tessa Grill, who put the ball in the back of the net.

Millot said his girls are anxious for a rematch against Marshfield on Saturday after the Tigers eked out a double overtime win on April 17.

“We know we can play with them, we just have to prove it,” said Millot. “The kids will come out ready to play. They want to get a good seed.”

A win against the Tigers would go a long way toward getting a quality seed for the playoffs, which start next week.
