Community : Visitors to the bird feeders
by Marion Soch - Correspondent
The fishermen had good weather for opening of the fishing season...sunshine and warmth but windy. Some had good luck fishing and others didn't, but there were lots of fishermen out there. Hope there will be more good weekends for them this summer.
The spring birds are beginning to arrive with new ones almost every day since Saturday, and what a joy to see them. Now we have to hope the bears stay away from the feeders so we can leave them out, otherwise we will have to take them in every night.
Kathy and Joe Macaluso reported they had three Baltimore Orioles arrive on Friday at their feeders and two male Wood Ducks and one female are enjoying their pond and the river at their place.
Don Gastrau called on Saturday to report they have several hummers already, and "his" little youngster deer from last year comes in every day to get her treats from them. She is no bigger than a dog...must have had no mother to take care of her through the winter.
The Rose Breasted Grosbeaks have been coming to the feeders since Saturday, increasing by one each day, so now we have three coming. We thought we had an Orchard Oriole arrive on Saturday, but it just didn't look right to me, so I studied it and went to the bird book and found that it was a Rufous Sided Towhee, which stayed at the feeders all day and frequently on Sunday. I hope it stays around. Early Monday, the male Baltimore Oriole showed his face here. I hope to see them around for awhile. The oranges and grape jelly are out for them, as is the liquid feeder. The Indigo Buntings should arrive by next week.
Lois Kemps said they enjoy watching the birds feed, but take the feeder down when the red squirrel gets in it and he sits there and scolds her. Then it comes over to our yard and tries to get in the feeders.
Some of the cabin folks who were here for the weekend were Larry Van Boxel and Lynn along with friends Dick and Sherri. Jerry Huth stopped by to visit with Lois and Russ Kemps on Saturday. Chop and John Van Zeeland, Roy and kids and his brother John, and cousin Tim came for a full weekend of fishing. Wayne and Rosie Konitzer were at their place for a long weekend again.
Gordy and Ruth Mueller came early in the week to stay for a few days. They stopped by the Kemps to give Russ some Green Bay newspapers to read, which is something he enjoys.
Paul and Vergil Schultz were here for the weekend. We enjoyed having breakfast with them in Iron River and Paul's brother and wife, Ed and Arlys, on Saturday. It was a great visit with all of them, as it had been a long time since seeing them.
Don Gastrau said he would like to tell the public of his bad experience with the sleeping pill. He had some nasty side effects from the drug having some terrible nightmares causing him to do bad things while sleeping. So he advises anyone to either not use it or proceed with caution, based on his experience.
I attended the Seminar on Estate Planning given last Tuesday at the Copper Country and found it very informative...learned a lot of new things very worthwhile knowing. Also I found out one is never too young or too old to plan one's estate and keep it updated. So if you get a chance to attend one of these, take advantage of it, or go to see a good estate planner.
It just started raining here in Popple River. I hope it continues all day.
Have a good week everyone.
