Hi Everybody.

Sorry I missed last week. LoBo and I took a trip down south to Missouri. Our daughter-in-law had a surprise birthday party for our son. It was fun and he was surprised. I laughed at us on the way home though, we were only gone six days and we could hardly wait to get home to Wabeno.

“The Wizard of Oz,” the play that the Wabeno High School performed Friday, April 20 was one of the best we have gone to. Wabeno students should be proud of themselves for that one. The sets were outstanding and according to Pat Lowery, some of the kids had put 165 hours into doing all the work. Their task was accomplished beautifully. In fact, a friend of mine who works in the Eagle River School District as a music teacher remarked to me how she wished she could have it viewed by another music director at her school. She was so very impressed with the overall production. I don't know how that makes all of you feel but I was bursting my buttons feeling so proud of the actors' and the crews' work. The creative methods with sound and lights were stupendous. How ingenious! How incredible! It makes me want to go again and again. I hate to wait a whole year to see another one. The Production Team should also be given accolades for their efforts. One other thing I want to mention is the Wabeno 2007 High School Theater Patrons. What a great gift to give our community. Next year it will be better with even more supporters. I know that we will be one of them.

I received an e-mail from Ron Hager. Remember him? He graduated in 1952 from Wabeno High School. He now lives near Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon. He said he visits Wabeno and his family in Rhinelander (his brother, Max, and sister, Nancy). In-between visits he uses the Internet to catch up on the news. He also said my column helps. Thank you for that Ron.

I got a note from Carol Diny. She and her husband, Jerry, live on Trump Lake Road. Their daughter, Kristine Gray, was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief in the Daytona Beach, Fla., Fire Department. She will head the training division, teaching other fire officers. Chief Gray joined the department in 1994. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota where she was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps, then in the Army National Guard as a Military Police officer, then received her master's degree from the University of Central Florida. Kristine resides in Daytona Beach with her husband Michael, and their four children. The department spokesman, Lt. John King commented, “She's a good role model for her children and for a lot of women out there, and the fire service itself.”

Hearing stories like this makes you know life is good. I can tell you that life is good here in Wabeno too.

On May 1, BJ's Market opened. We weren't here for the opening day, but I heard people were lined up and down the street to be the first to shop. I guess Larry Rummel and Jan Volk beat everyone out to be first in line. The Wabeno Kindergarten children were also delighted and made a poster that says “Welcome to Wabeno. We are so happy your doors are open. Good Luck from the Wabeno Kindergarten” The poster had little houses pasted on it with doors that opened and the kids had drawn people sticking their heads out. What a welcoming!

The store really looks nice and the prices are great, and the veggies and meats look wonderful. BJ's Market now has a vested interest in the Wabeno High School Band. On Saturday May 5, they gave the band permission to sell outside the store and donated all the soda (or pop as I refer to it), and the 3 B's, brats, burgers and buns. The money the kids collect during the sale will go to aid the High School Band members, who will be going to San Antonio, Texas, for competition in August. What a store!

I received a call one afternoon from an anonymous person, who sounded very familiar, but shall remain nameless. He was looking for the phone number of the Christian Thrift Store. It is (715) 473-6509. He ended the call with,” I just love this place. Don't you?” Words from my own heart.

Call or write with interest or news to: Betts Bodoh, Box 222, Wabeno, WI 54566. Phone at 715-473-3808 or e-mail me at lobolu@centurytel.net.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Early season walleye fishing
Early season open water fishing for many northern Wisconsin anglers means walleye fishing. There is a group who spend the first few weeks of the fishing season on some of the backwoods trout streams searching for some native brookies. Even though the trout streams see a lot of angling pressure early in the season the heavy fishing activity is on area lakes where anglers are pursuing the tasty walleyes. READ MORE >
