Last week in a match against Lakeland, the Rhinelander boys' tennis team was propelled by its double teams. On Tuesday, it was the Hodags' singles players who were the difference as Rhinelander edged Wisconsin Rapids 4-3 to earn its first Wisconsin Valley Conference win of the season.

“This was a needed win over a school that consistently finishes in the top three in the conference,” Rhinelander head coach Bob Heideman said.

The match essentially came down to the duel at No. 2 singles between Rhinelander's Andy Bognar and Rapids' Pete Boettcher. Bognar won the first set 7-5 before falling 6-4 the next set. In the third and decisive set, Bognar trailed 4-3, but kept working Boettcher.

“Andy's opponent was coming to the net at every opportunity and Andy used a measured blend of passing shots and lobs,” Heideman said.

At No. 1 singles, Rahul Jain had little difficulty in winning 6-1, 6-3. Abe Phillips, No. 4 singles, played an athlete who had a similar style game and won 6-4, 6-2.

The lone victory in doubles for the Hodags came at No. 3 where Matt Peacock and Dan Barbian took down Rapids' pair 6-2, 6-3.

“Matt and Dan kept hitting crosscourt to set points up at the net,” said Heideman. “They also played the wind well.”

Shane Polzin lost at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 1-6. No. 1 doubles of Kolin Dean and Jordan Rhode fell 1-6, 0-6. Dan Chojnacki and Steve Trochlil were beaten at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6.

Rhinelander is next off to Marshfield Thursday at 4 p.m.
