Community : Blackwell students participate in leadership training
Rhinelander, Wisc., April 19, 2007 — For the fifth consecutive year, the Outdoor Education Program at Northland, the Environmental Liberal Arts College in Ashland, conducted leadership training for student leaders from the Blackwell Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. Students from Blackwell traveled from their campus near Laona to Northland’s Maxwell site located south of Ashland on April 11. There they participated in experiential leadership training that was facilitated by Northland student Jenna McIntyre and by Northland Professors Paul Van Horn and Cindy Dillenschneider.
The Blackwell students had the opportunity to camp under the stars, test their mettle on a climbing wall and hone their interpersonal skills through organized interactive activities. Before departing, the Blackwell participants toured the Northland College campus and enjoyed a meal in the campus dining room.
Blackwell Student Government Association President Dartanyeol Dukes, one of the participants, said, “This was fun. I learned things I can apply in my leadership position and in everyday life.”
The partnership between Blackwell JCCCC and Northland College has been very positive according to Blackwell Center Director Jason Maloney. According to Maloney, “Year after year the students and staff in the Outdoor Education Program at Northland provide our students at Blackwell with professional quality experiential leadership training. We are indeed lucky to have an institution like Northland located in Wisconsin. It is my hope that our partnership will continue for many years to come because of the great training it provides for our students.”
Blackwell JCCCC offers federal scholarships for young adults under the age of 25. In addition to leadership training, students at Blackwell receive academic training that leads to completion of an HSED or High School Diploma as well as vocational training in Welding, Union Bricklaying and Tile setting, Union Carpentry, Union Construction Craft Laborer, Union Painting, Health Occupations (CAN), Business Technologies, and Electrician Training.
