Community : Breakout in Hiles
by Pat Pfeiffer - Correspondent
Looks like Mother Nature wasn't pulling an April Fool joke on us. Spring is really here. The pond behind our house is ice free, and that usually happens about a week before the ice goes out on the lake, so it seems to predict an early ice-out date this year.
The next big seasons for local sportsmen and women coming up are the turkey spring hunt and fishing season. I'm pretty sure the lake will be ready for boats in plenty of time for fishing this year.
A few of the local fellows took in the Turkey and White Tail Expo in Madison over this past weekend. Looking over the literature they brought back, I am amazed at how many different calling devices there are to lure a big gobbler out into shooting range. There are hundreds! And on top of that, there are many calls for just about any other type of game you might be after.
Sometimes I think the animals these calls and lures (including fishing lures) are designed to catch are the hunters and fishermen. I think they do a pretty good job of that.
Pool League Celebrates
Last Thursday evening the ladies of the Hiles Pool League met at Pine Lake Pub to carpool to Mallard's on Metonga for a celebration dinner. They were presented by their team captains with blue or red ribbons denoting First Place and Second Place according to their team's finishing rank,. First place was taken by Kathy Bruenning's team and Marilyn Pfeiffer's team came in second. But bragging rights are good only until next year when names will again be drawn for the teams, and the gals never know until then whose team they will be on.
Everyone enjoyed the dinner, and though many different entrees were chosen by the ladies, they all seemed to be very happy with their meals. I believe everyone agreed that the food was delicious, the newly redecorated bar and dining room beautiful, and the friendly service was great.
Breakout in Hiles
Do you know what they call those little blue dots you can get from the chalked end of a pool cue stick? They have been named, sometime in the history of pool playing, as “Pool Pox”.
Well, it seems with the dawn of April Fool's Day that a certain young woman in Hiles who enjoys a game of pool now and then woke up to find blue dots all over her house and surrounding trees. A sign in the front yard proclaimed “Quarantine-Pool Pox”, with a skull and crossbones symbol. But the cross bones were actually two pool cues. She's not naming any names as perpetrators, but a certain friend made sure she didn't get home too early the evening before.
Easter Leftovers?
I can just picture ol' Farmer Joe, out in the hen house telling his hens they must step up production because Easter is coming. Maybe it doesn't happen that way, but eggs prices always seem to be lower around this time of the year, and eggs are plentiful. Eggs are a good source of protein and always a bargain. They can be served in so many delicious ways. Dying lots of Easter eggs is fun for kids and grown-ups alike. But after Easter you might have a lot of them left over. The following recipe is a tasty way to use them up, but keep it handy because it is a nice salad to take to a pot luck, too.
Egg and Rice Salad
12 servings
10 ounces frozen green peas
8 hard-boiled eggs, coarsely chopped
3 cups cooked brown rice or white rice
1 cup celery, sliced
1/4 cup onions, chopped
4 ounces Monterey jack cheese, cubed
2 ounces diced pimentos
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon dill weed
paprika (optional)
Rinse peas under cold water to separate; drain.
In a large bowl mix together peas, eggs, rice, celery, onion, cheese, and pimiento.
In a small bowl combine mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and dill weed.
Mix with egg mixture.
Sprinkle paprika on top to garnish.
Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours, but no longer than 24 hours.
By the way, after the kids find those eggs that the Easter bunny hid, don't leave them out at room temperature for very long. Get them into the refrigerator to keep them safe.
