Community : First annual talent show a success
by Leah Ziolkowski - Correspondent
'"Christ, the Lord, is risen today,"
Sons of men and angels say,
Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply.'
- Charles Wesley, 1707-1788, Hymns and Sacred Poems.
While playing a game of "I spy" with my daughter, I came to realize how dead everything looks this time of year. "I spy something, brown...I spy something, gray..." It's that time of year when we will soon witness the great miracle of new life. The ice melts, the water starts to flow again. The hills and forests will turn green and many colorful flowers will burst from the earth. It all reminds us of life that is never ending. Happy Easter!
Here's a traditional Polish recipe. It's like gingerbread at Christmas time. Enjoy!
Orange Mazurek
(Mazurek Pomaranczowy)
2 cups ground almonds
1 cup sugar
juice of 1 lemon
Topping:
1 lemon
2 oranges
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
Grease and flour a cookie sheet. Mix the ingredients to form a paste that will spread. Place mixture evenly on pan and bake at 200F for 15 minutes. Grate both the pulp and the rinds of the lemon and oranges, removing only the seeds, or chop coarsely, and puree in blender. Combine all ingredients and cook over medium heat until mixture thickens. Cool, and then beat lightly with wooden spoon until mixture begins to take on a pearlized, or frosted, coloration. Spread on the cake and let set before slicing.
Goodman and Armstrong Creek Has Talent
The Goodman Armstrong Creek Booster Club held their first annual "Talent Show" on Sunday, February 18th. Pat Millan cleaned up his usual jokes and kept us all in stitches as the comedic MC. The PTO started the show off as "The Refrigerator Magnets" with their version of "Dueling Banjoes" or was it dueling Spoons, washboards and jugs.
Bonnie Jo Pyrcz played her guitar and sang Johnny Cash's "What do I care" and the polka, "Wooden Heart." She also played several songs on her banjo. Chad Kowalkowski played a trumpet solo from "The Pirates of the Caribbean." Jade Gretzinger showed off some cool moves in a solo dance to "London Bridge." Our own local "garage band," "Void" performed two songs written by lead guitarist Zack Ziolkowski. Chad Kowalkowski sang lead vocals, Brian Stankevich played bass guitar and Taylor Ziolkowski played drums. Brody Millan displayed an unusual talent with his "Gyro Rings." Dylan Vandermuelen sang a rap song that he wrote himself. Sara Ipsa blew us all away with her vocal talent as she sang a rock song. (She also sang the National Anthem at the girls basketball game later that week!)
The afternoon ended with the audience taking turns making animal noises. There was a cow, a loon, a turkey, an elephant and even a baloney monster.
Everyone did a wonderful job making the first annual event successful.
They hope to have an even bigger turn out next year. What's your talent? You have a whole year to practice!
Happy Birthday to:
