Running at a 200-meter track is a luxury the Rhinelander girls' and boys' track and field teams don't get too often. When Northland Pines contacted Hodags girls' head coach Mike Shay to compete in a six-team Eagle Indoor Invitational Tuesday, Shay jumped at the chance.
“We get them on a nice track and let them run,” Shay said.
Pines' new indoor facility gave the Hodag athletes a chance to compete before they have to take on Wisconsin Valley Conference teams.
Rhinelander -- who was shorthanded because of injuries and some athletes were kept from competing because the team has three meets this week -- finished in sixth place with 32 points.
“I think we could have done better, but we didn't run all the girls we could have,” said Shay.
Lakeland won the meet going away with 200.5 points. Park Falls was third (72), followed by Northland Pines (66).
Sophomore Allie Fortier was the Hodags' top finisher, winning the 55-meter hurdles (10.76). Coach Shay was pleased with Fortier's time since his runners haven't had much of an opportunity to practice hurdles yet this season.
The 4x800 (11:16.48) and 4x200 (2:03.22) relay teams both finished in third place.
Morgan Moller tied for third in the high jump (4'8”). Allie Lodholz came sixth in the triple jump (26'8 1/4”).
Lakeland dominated in the distance runs, with Sarah Glunn winning the 1,600 (5:51.12) and the 800 (2:44.81). Lindsey Goff came in runner-up in the 800 (2:49.42) and first in the 400 (1:07.47). Amy Holcombe won the 3,200 (12:57.05).
The T-Birds also won the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.
In the triple jump, Erin Blow (31'1/2”), Nicole Michaels (28'2”) and Stacey Falesch (27'10 1/2”) finished 1-2-3.
Northland Pines' Megan Gwyn nabbed two first-place finishes on the day in the 200-meter hurdles (32.9) and 200 dash (29.18).
In the 55-meter dash, Gretchen Miller was runner-up (8.08).
Boys
The Hodag boys finished in third with 98 points, just behind Medford (111) and Lakeland (154); Northland Pines was fourth (70).
“We were hoping for second, but we just missed scoring 100 points,” Rhinelander head coach Bill Makris said. “That would have been a goal for the team.”
Like Shay, Makris wanted to get his kids
“Excellent facility to run in -- it was great to run on,” Makris said. “We can't wait until next year.”
Jake Mahoney (46' 2 1/4”) and Steve Chrisinger (46'1/4”) came in first and second in the shot put. Chrisinger improved his distance by two feet.
Eric Borchardt won the long jump (19'8”) and was second in the 400 (57.18).
Jeff Cook clocked in at 11:02.57 in the 3,200 to win the race.
In the 200 dash, Eddie Stefonek (25.88) came in runner-up. Andy Schoff was second in the 1,600 (4:54.26).
The Hodags' 4x800 relay team finish third (9:19.98), as did the 4,200 team (1:48.32).
Zach Baron (8.83) came in third in the 55 hurdles. Matt Furyk (38'2 1/2”) was third in the triple jump).
“The kids ran well -- there were a lot of personal records,” Makris said.
Lakeland nabbed many first-place finishes en route to winning the meet.
Luke Voellinger won the 55 hurdles (8.48), 200 hurdles (28.07)
Jon Goessl (2:13.54) was first in the 800 run.
The T-Birds' 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams also got first place.
For Northland Pines, Matt Cummings (5'10”) was tops in the high jump).
Kurtis Punzel (29.49) was second in the 200 hurdles. Chris Mortag (8.81) placed runner-up in the 55 hurdles.
Up next for the Hodag boys, they will have two weeks to prepare for the Wisconsin Valley Conference Indoor meet on April 10 at Stevens Point. The girls will have a dual meet at Antigo Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
