When Lisa Wierschke saw the lot for sale on the corner of Cross Country Road and Highway 17 North, she immediately wanted to purchase it.

“We've been up for 10 years and have a cottage on Pine Lake,” Wierschke said. “We enjoy the area and we've always liked this spot.”

A year later, Wierschke is now the owner of the sporty Cross Country Bar and Grill, which is marked by a tall wooden statue by Nathan Nuskiewicz, located between Rhinelander and the Town of Sugar Camp.

Equipped with 14 television sets in the bar, restaurant and bathrooms, and decorated with trees extending into the woodwork to give the place a Northwoods appeal, the Cross Country bar will also include an outdoor patio in the spring. “The patio will be 20 x 50 feet, which will be for outdoor dining,” Wierschke said.

The restaurant caters to families and snowmobilers, features live entertainment Saturday evenings and offers free wireless Internet each day of the week, Wierschke says.

“Smoking is allowed, but we have a state-of-the-art smoke-free ventilation system and good food,” she said.

Wierschke says her establishment will also host outdoor volleyball and horseshoe leagues.

Each Friday, the specials on the menu include Lake Michigan perch, grilled or fried haddock and grilled or fried shrimp.

The Cross Country bar will be airing the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) games regularly, and will sell National Football League (NFL) and March Madness tickets.

For those hoping to own a bar in the future, Wierschke says, “just follow your dream. We did a lot of work to make this happen.”
