The Crandon Cardinals J.V. girls' basketball team ended their 2006-07 season on February 16 with a win over White Lake. That victory gave the girls a sparkling 17-2 record overall, and in the NLC, they finished 12-1, good for a tie for first place with Wabeno.

According to junior varsity coach Steve Weber, these girls exceeded his expectations.

“I was hoping for 12 to 13 wins when the season started. To get 17 wins showed how much these girls wanted to play,” said Weber.

Having basically eight girls to practice and play with presented some challenges, but Weber said these girls were ready.

“These kids stepped up and did a nice job. They played hard and did anything they were asked. We used two managers so we could go five-on-five in practice. We played man defense most of the time. These girls played with injuries and sometimes with foul terrible, and they earned everything they got.”

Weber was pleased that the girls met some of their goals as well.

“We set a goal on defense of only giving up 20 points per game,” he said. “We ended up with an 18.1 average. We averaged 35 points on offense, which is exceptional on the J.V. level. These girls were patient on offense and aggressive on defense. They played into their roles. They have a lot of desire and heart. I am very proud of them.”
