Prep Profile
In the gym: Variety is the name of Lakeland Union High School senior Brigitte Anich's game. She is a three-sport athlete who competes in gymnastics, volleyball and soccer. “I like all of them about equal because they are all so different,” she said. “Volleyball is a very team-oriented sport, while gymnastics is much more individual, and soccer is the only sport I play where you can be physical and aggressive.” Anich has won a number of awards as an athlete: volleyball (all-conference honorable mention junior and senior years; best server as a sophomore); gymnastics (second team all-state beam; honorable mention all-state all-around sophomore year; rookie of the year as a freshman). She has also been a gymnastics team co-captain her junior and senior year, and holds the school record on the beam with a 9.45.
Outside the gym: In Anich's spare time she likes to hang out with friends and relax. It's also her hobby to play piano -- which she learned from watching her mother, Mary Dunphy -- and read. She enjoys Harry Potter books and writing by Nicholas Sparks. Anich's favorite television show is “Friends” because “it makes me laugh, which is my favorite thing in the world to do,” she said. Her favorite movie of all time is “Shawshank Redemption.” In addition, “Moulin Rouge” -- which is where the music she uses for her floor routine in gymnastics comes from -- and “When Harry met Sally” also top her list. When school is out for the summer, Anich works at Spang's restaurant in Minocqua. Last year she served as a hostess, but this summer she will be a waitress. After high school, Anich will be off to college -- most likely at a school on the east coast. She has been accepted to the University of Rhode Island and the University of Wisconsin and has also applied to the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Providence College. “ I do not know what I am planning to major in yet,” she said. “I am just really excited to graduate from high school, see the rest of the country, and be more independent.”
