A Crandon native currently serving in Afghanistan is asking her hometown to reach out to the needy children of Afghanistan.

Lisa (Guinther) Tonnar is a Navy Supply Corps Officer stationed in Gardez, Afghanistan.

“I was mobilized last March and am part of the first Navy Embedded Training Teams with one year orders stationed in Gardez,” she said in a recent e-mail to Northwoods Media.

Tonnar says her primary job is to teach Afghan logistics officers and help with humanitarian assistance missions. During her tour in Afghanistan, Tonnar says she's watched as local children endure harsh winter weather with a very meager supply of clothing.

“The people here have nothing,” she said. “The children go days at a time without eating and do not have adequate clothing for the freezing temperatures here.”

Donations of any new or used clothing, school supplies and toys would be greatly appreciated by the Afghan children, Tonnar said.

Anyone interested in donating to the children of Gardez can mail items to the following address:
