RHS girls stay with Everest until the end

Seven weeks ago, the Rhinelander girls' basketball team had a tough time handling D.C. Everest, losing 49-27. On Tuesday, the Hodags threw some different defensive looks at the Evergreens and gave them a tight contest -- falling just 47-40 at Everest.

“We played a pretty good game,” Rhinelander head coach Heidi Preul said.

The Hodags (1-14 overall, 0-11 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference) had everything going well early, up 8-3 after eight minutes. In the second quarter, Everest put up 14 points and led 17-15 at halftime. The Hodags -- although extremely undersized compared to Everest -- stayed in the game in the opening half because of strong rebounding.

In the third quarter, the Hodags hit just two field goals as Everest pushed its advantage to 29-22.

“The third quarter has been our demise all season,” Preul said. “The third quarter was the difference tonight.”

Everest maintained a comfortable cushion late in the fourth quarter to escape with the win.

Rhinelander hit 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter, but the Evergreens also shot well.

Coach Preul knew going into the game that if her team was to stay within striking distance of Everest, they would have to stop post Carmen Leitermann, who scored 20 points against Rhinelander in their December meeting.

Leitermann had just two points Tuesday night.

“Our goal was to take Leitermann out of the game and we did,” said Preul.

The Hodags, who got some quality minutes from Cassie Krueger, were led by Kerry Kost's 12 points. Ashley Polacek scored 11.

On Friday, the Hodags will host Marshfield (8-2 in the WVC) at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers beat Rhinelander 75-30 in the Hodags' fifth game of the season.

Marshfield will be led by Randi Burr, who scored 22 last game against the Hodags, and Danielle Carlson and Katie Wolff, who returns after missing a few games.

“I hope we can carry this momentum into Marshfield,” Preul said.

Dangerously unfair ‘fairness doctrine' (01.28.2007)
Many liberals believe they are far more firm in their support of freedom of speech than many conservatives. A strong argument against this stereotyping of both sides is the current campaign to restore the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting by, among others, four liberal Democrat members of Congress - Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and U.S. Reps. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio), and Maurice Hinchey and Louise Slaughter (New York). They intend to bring this assault on freedom of speech back to life in the new Congress. READ MORE >
