Lake of the Torches Resort Casino presented both the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods and the Abinoojiiyag (Youth) Center with $1,500 each on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The checks were part of the casino's continuing commitment of donating money and supplies to Lakeland area charities around the time of the holiday season.

“Lake of the Torches is proud to support these local charities that enrich the lives of youth right here in the Northwoods,” said Public Relations Coordinator Russ Sineni.

The Abinoojiiyag Center will use the donation to purchase equipment and help offset the costs of tournament entry fees for youth participating in the Martial Arts program, said Activities Director and Martial Arts Instructor Dave Sixel.

The program has grown significantly since starting 13 years ago and receiving this additional financial support assures that all who want to be involved in the program are welcomed, he said.

Participants in the program have been invited to join Team USA, a national honor for martial arts athletes, for the past six years. Members of the local martial arts team will travel to Spain and Portugal in November to demonstrate their martial arts skills.

“It's very nice to receive this important support from Lake of the Torches,” Sixel said.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods will use its donation to assist in funding its mentoring program at area schools.

As part of this program, students from ages 5 to 17 are paired with an adult for one-on-one mentoring sessions. Research has shown that youth who participate in these programs are less likely begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, have better school attendance and are less likely to act violently.

“We appreciate this donation very much,” said Michelle Gipple, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods.

Dangerously unfair ‘fairness doctrine' (01.28.2007)
Many liberals believe they are far more firm in their support of freedom of speech than many conservatives. A strong argument against this stereotyping of both sides is the current campaign to restore the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting by, among others, four liberal Democrat members of Congress - Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and U.S. Reps. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio), and Maurice Hinchey and Louise Slaughter (New York). They intend to bring this assault on freedom of speech back to life in the new Congress. READ MORE >
