Mike Nelson promoted at CBS
Tomahawk native Mike Nelson has been promoted to Vice President of Communications, CBS Television Stations. Tom Kane, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS Television Stations, and Dana McClintock, Senior Vice President, Communications, CBS Corporation made the announcement.
Nelson will serve as the lead spokesperson for the CBS Television Stations group, which includes 39 stations that are owned by CBS: 21 CBS stations, 11 affiliates of The CW network, three MyNetworkTV network affiliates and four independent stations that are not affiliated with major networks. He will also be responsible for managing the station group's media relations and internal communications functions.
Nelson will maintain offices both in New York and in Los Angeles, where he will continue in his current role as head of the Communications Department for KCBS-TV (CBS 2) and KCAL-TV (KCAL 9).
Since July 2002, Nelson has been a member of the KCBS-KCAL management team that has been responsible for leading CBS 2's return to prominence in the highly competitive Los Angeles market. In May of this year, CBS 2 earned its first 11 p.m. news victory in a major, non-Olympic sweep since the early 1970s.
Prior to joining CBS, Nelson spent six years with NBC in Burbank, California, where he was responsible for directing corporate and employee communications initiatives for the company's West Coast businesses, including the NBC Entertainment division.
Before that, he spent 13 years in the National Basketball Association with the Milwaukee Bucks (1983-87) and Golden State Warriors (1988-96).The son of Wilbert and Gloria Nelson of Tomahawk, Mike Nelson graduated from Tomahawk High School in 1983 and then majored in broadcast journalism at Marquette University in Milwaukee.
