SPORTS -- Cards open with a non-conference loss

The Crandon girls opened their varsity basketball season with a 30 to 46 loss to Wausaukee last Thursday night. The Lady Rangers took an early 17-6 first quarter lead which proved to be enough as they went on to an easy victory.

The young Cardinal team struggled as they looked to find a rhythm. At times they showed signs of good things to come. However, they had a hard time finishing on offense and got a little lost on defense. It was obvious that nerves played a major roll in the team's play as they looked to find stability. Lots of court time and trusting each other on the defensive end is something that will make this young team a lot better. One thing they did show throughout the game was a lot of hustle and heart.

Box Score for Crandon: K. Mattson 4 pts.; K. Engebretson 2 pts.; J. Bradley 9 pts.; J. Anderson 3 pts.; S. Weber 2 pts.; H. Cracraft 2 pts.; A. Wojnowski 4 pts.; A. Wilson 4 pts. Sarah Weber led the team in rebounds with 9 and Kathryn Mattson led the team in steals with 7 and assists with 3.

The girls will travel to Suring on Monday the 27th with hopes of improving their game before conference play starts. Their conference opener will be Dec. 5 at Three Lakes.

The Crandon Girls' Basketball program would like to thank Vern Hollister for covering our games while he was with the Forest Republican. He did an excellent job and his coverage was great for the Northern Lakes Conference. Now, some of us will have to remember how to write articles again!
