FNRA SportsNorth Chapter Banquet
The Friends of NRA, a separate non-profit branch of the NRA, will hold the SportsNorth Chapter Banquet on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in Rhinelander. Tickets are $45 per person and net proceeds from the various banquets are given out as grants to organizations promoting shooting sports. For registration information, contact Scott or Dianne Jacobson at 369-7362.
Acorn Collections
The Wisconsin DNR at the Rhinelander Ranger Station, 511 North Hanson Lake Road, will be purchasing good quality red oak acorns, white pine cones, and red pine cones this fall. We will pay $30 per bushel for red oak, $20 per bushel for white pine, and $40 per bushel for red pine (1 bushel minimum). The seed will be used to produce trees at the three DNR tree nurseries. In 2005 the DNR sold millions of oak and pine trees that were grown in state nurseries from seed collected by the public.
Persons interested in collecting acorns and/or cones must contact the Rhinelander Ranger Station at 715-365-2633 or 715-365-2634 in order to register and obtain information prior to collecting. Information will be provided on species identification and acorn and cone quality requirements. No acorns or cones will be accepted without first registering. Acorns generally fall in the Rhinelander area from late August to mid-September, and cones will also ripen at this time.

Soros goes after America's judges (09.17.2006)
Billionaire George Soros, a naturalized American citizen born in Hungary, takes a lively interest in the politics of his adopted country. Soros, who made his first big killing in the field of international finance by betting against the British pound, spent $24 million of his own hard-earned money trying to defeat George W. Bush and elect John Kerry in the presidential election of 2004. He is now plowing millions more into supporting such leftist agitprop organizations as MoveOn.org, to influence the coming congressional elections. And, apparently equally discontented with the political direction of various European countries, he is reportedly putting even greater sums (apparently in the hundreds of millions of dollars) into ventures to influence the politics of those nations.
