State Representative Dan Meyer wants to give town boards veto power over the DNR when it comes to land purchases.

Meyer, (R-Eagle River), has authored a proposal to the Joint Finance Committee that would give town boards the right to veto Department of Natural Resources purchases of public land in towns where 35 percent or more of the land is already under public ownership.

Under the proposal, a majority vote by the town board would be required to approve each purchase above the 35 percent threshold.

"Wisconsin currently spends $60 million per year to purchase land. Often such purchases are done without concern to the impact on local communities and the taxes that people pay," said Meyer. "This proposal simply says that before the DNR is allowed to purchase more land in a town in which 35 percent or more land is already publicly owned, that the town board gets a say in the decision."

A similar provision already exists limiting the amount of land the DNR may purchase using Stewardship funding, Meyer said.
